The Signage System is designed
to accommodate simple
and straight-forward wording in order
to communicate effectively. Irrelevant verbiage
pollutes the signs and will
only serve to intimidate, confuse,
and alienate the viewer. To
maximize comprehension, the amount of copy on
a sign
must be kept to a minimum for quick reading.
Minimal nomenclature shall be used on the
exterior signs. Only the building names shall be
identified on the directional signs to eliminate
any unnecessary confusion and clutter. College names are
not considered relevant information on the directional signs, and therefore shall
not be listed.
Exterior building identification signs listing
the departments within, tend to crowd the
sign with information that could be better provided
inside the building. Therefore, departments shall
be identified
on interior directories.
Once concise wording
is established it must be
applied consistently to the various sign types
throughout the Signage System. This consistency and economy of wording is important to the establishment for
the Exterior Signage System.
Where Rutgers Signage Standards are in conflict
with the existing regulations, the following codes shall supersede:
New Jersey Uniform Construction Code
BOCA National Building Code
ANSI A117.1-1986
