This manual includes the
designs and guidelines to regulate the implementation of a standard signage system throughout
all of the
campuses at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The Rutgers Exterior
Signage Standard Manual has been developed in response to a need for a
comprehensive master signage program. The vast array of existing
signage
"systems" were found to be an inadequate and
an ineffective means
of communicating identification and directional information to the public.
The signage system is directed towards
establishing a distinct and professional graphic image throughout the
University. The system provides consistent visual standards to assist
operational functions and to establish
a practical and economical
method for
implementation throughout the campuses.
A standardized system is dependent
upon a uniformity of size, typography, spacing, layout,
color, nomenclature and
simplicity of components. Simplicity is of top priority
in the criteria for good
signage design. The end user does not wish
to, and therefore, usually will not respond to non-audible direction if too complex, no matter
how correct the information has been related. To achieve this
minimal but effective architectural signage, it is important to render
to the traveler in a concise manner
the most essential decision information on an as need basis.
Exterior sign types
have been developed to satisfy specific signage requirements. Each sign type has a specific function as
an integral part of the overall system. They have been developed to separate
information into primary and secondary levels, eliminating the confusion of
competing messages of varying importance.
The Exterior Signage System effectively defines
and reinforces the different campuses through color
coding. In addition a unified image for the
University is created through the use
of scarlet graphic striping on the sign posts. This striping is a contemporary feature
representing the present image of the University as well as indicating its
heritage. These
stripes are reminiscent of the stripes found on graduation gowns
and athletic
uniforms. They symbolize the alliance of education and
athletics that is so prominent at Rutgers. Scarlet
is the University color which further expresses
the tradition of the University.
Most situations have been
covered. However, as the program advances, special
conditions will arise. These will have
to be
handled individually with the graphic character
that has been established in this manual. A letter
of justification must be sent to the Campus Director of
Facilities Maintenance & Operations for his comment(s) and
to the V.P. of Facilities for
approval of deviation(s) from the Standards.
The success of this program depends on the
active support and participation of the entire University.
