What's
New in Facilities?

January
2007, A New Information
Technology Initiative
University Facilities recently introduced a new web-based “On
Line Plan Room” to share
blueprints,
technical drawings and
construction documents with
architects, engineers and
contractors
On-Line
Plan Room Becomes A Reality

What
is an “On-Line Plan Room?”
The On Line
Plan Room is a web based
repository that allows users
to find, view and obtain
university construction
drawings.
The On-Line Plan Room
information is stored
electronically at two separate
sites, an added benefit exists
in safeguarding the
information from fire and
other potential natural
disasters. The system
generates two reports; a
transaction log showing all
requests for information and a
second report documenting
system activities. All
construction projects, once
completed will be archived for
future reference.

How
Does it Work?
In the past, when University Facilities issued bids
for construction projects, the
department needed to produce
costly paper copies which were
then distributed to all
approved contractors
participating in the bid
process.
Today, the same approved contractors will be provided
with a web-based password
allowing full access to all
pertinent and application
construction drawings.
The contractor has the
option of printing out the
document or viewing documents
on-line when preparing the bid
submittal.

|
|
|
|
What are the Benefits?
University Facilities typically incurred printing charges
ranging from $3000 to $12,000
for each university
construction project.
Web-based distribution of blue
prints and documents is about
1/5 the cost of printing
hardcopy documents thus
achieving a significant cost
reduction to the university
monetary resources and
environmental resources.

|
|
|
|
|
|
Why
Now?
Technology associated with web-based blue print sharing is
growing and gaining acceptance
among top tier,
progressive institutions.
University Facilities
envisions utility system
managers, fire fighters,
police, building
space
managers, and academic
departments using and
benefiting from this emerging
technology and service.

Who
is Responsible?
The
Rutgers
On-Line Plan Room is being
jointly implemented by
Facilities Business
Administration, Facilities
Project Administration, and
the University Architect- all
organizational units of
University Facilities.
Enhanced
information distribution,
synergy and migration towards
a “paperless” work
environment are key
productivity
enhancements behind the
Rutgers On-Line Plan Room.
