Initiating Projects

Planners Estimators are responsible for planning renovation projects.  In most cases, Contract Services is the agency authorized to assist in the planning and design development of renovation projects and work closely with all Planner Estimators.  In addition to design support, this group also provides the university community with several construction options through unit-price bidding, union trade shops or construction bids.

Using in-house mechanical maintenance staff is discouraged from performing renovation work.  The mechanical maintenance staff is used to perform maintenance to the university facilities.  Only under very specific criteria will in-house maintenance staff perform renovation projects and projects must meet the following criteria:

·        One trade involvement

·        Projects must take less than 8 hours to complete

·        Projects must not interfere with scheduled routine mechanical maintenance tasks
